A recessed can refers to the housing installed within a drywall ceiling that will hold the light. In the past, the trim and bulb were 2 separate pieces. However, modern units are a built in LED retrofit where the trim and LED module are integrated into 1 piece with an adapter that will install easily within a traditional recessed can. The measurements provided (i.e. 4 aor 6 inch) refers to the inside diameter of the opening in the can.
