OSHA requires exit signs to be illuminated to at least 5 foot-candles (54 lux) on their surface and to be distinctive in color for clear visibility. The word “EXIT” must have letters at least 6 inches high with a stroke width of at least ¾ inch. Exit signs must be continuously illuminated, either by an external light source or through internally illuminated fixtures. When using internally illuminated signs, they must be listed and labeled by a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) to ensure compliance and safety during emergencies.
