Artificial lights can disorient sea turtles, especially hatchlings, drawing them away from the ocean and toward land-based light sources. This confusion increases the risk of predation, exhaustion, and dehydration. For adult turtles, bright or unshielded lighting can disrupt nesting behaviors, making it harder for females to lay eggs and ultimately reducing successful reproduction rates. Using turtle-friendly amber or red lighting helps protect these endangered species and supports responsible coastal illumination.
