The OSHA standard for exit signs is found in 29 CFR 1910.37(b), which requires exit signs to be clearly visible, illuminated to at least 5 foot-candles (54 lux), and have the word "EXIT" in legible letters at least 6 inches high with a principal stroke width of at least 3/4 of an inch. Additionally, exit routes must be marked by exit signs, and doors that could be mistaken for an exit must be marked "Not an Exit" or with a sign indicating their actual use.
