OSHA requires exit signs to be clearly visible, illuminated at all times, and marked with the word “EXIT” in legible letters at least 6 inches high and with a stroke width of at least 3/4 inch. Signs must be placed so that the direction of exit routes is unmistakable, and any doors or passages that might be mistaken for exits must be marked “Not an Exit.” Additionally, exit signs must be illuminated by a reliable light source and have a backup power supply in case of power failure.
